چکیده

Consonants in /CV/ syllables usually have potential influence on onset fundamental frequency (i.e., onset f0) of succeeding vowels. Previous studies showed such effect with respect to the aspiration of stops with evidence from Mandarin, a tonal language. While few studies investigated the effect on onset f0 from the aspiration of affricates. The differences between stops and affricates in aspiration leave space for further investigations. We examined the effect of affricate’s aspiration on the realization of onset f0 of following vowels in the form of isolated syllables and continuous speech by reference to a minimal pair of syllables which differ only in aspiration. Besides, we conducted tone identification tests using two sets of tone continua based on the same minimal pair of syllables. Experimental results showed that the aspirated syllables increased the onset f0 of following vowels compared with unaspirated counterparts in both kinds of contexts. While the magnitude of differences varied with tones. And the perception results showed that aspirated syllables tended to be perceived as tones that have relative lower onset f0, which in turn supported the production result. The present study may have applications for speech identification and speech synthesis.

On the (non)categorical perception of lexical tones.

Identification and discrimination of lexical tones in Cantonese were compared in the context of a traditional categorical perception paradigm. Three lexical tone continua were used: one ranging from low level to high level, one from high rising to high level, and one from low falling to high rising. Identification data showed steep slopes at category boundaries, suggesting that lexical tones ar...

The role of musical experience in Cantonese lexical tone perception by native speakers of Thai

Adult non-native perception is subject to influence from a variety of factors, including native language and musical experience. The present study investigates the influence of these two factors in the perception and learning of non-native lexical tones. Native Thai-speaking musicians and nonmusicians completed preand post-test identification tasks on five Cantonese tones, with 4 days of lexica...

The Influence of Linguistic Background on Asymmetric Tone Perception Induced by Position of Context

Previous studies on categorical perception of lexical tones showed that perception of Cantonese lexical level tones depends on pitch level of contexts and the contextual effect is specific to speech. Moreover, a pair of stimuli with a right context is easier to discriminate than that with a left context. Although this directional asymmetric perception was observed from both native and nonnative...

Phonetic and Lexical Effects on Speech Perception of Falling Tones

This study investigates phonetic and lexical effects on speech perception of high-falling tones and low-falling tones in Hakka and Mandarin. An identification task and a lexical decision task were conducted on 30 participants for each language. The results illustrate that onset pitch and pitch drop are more crucial phonetic attributes than offset pitch for native speakers to distinguish high-fa...

The separation between music and speech: evidence from the perception of Cantonese tones.

This study investigates the relationship between music and speech, testing whether musical training has any facilitatory effects on native tone language speakers. Some Cantonese tone pairs are merging in recent years. The merging subjects have poorer general lexical tone perception than the control subjects. Previous studies showed that musical training facilitates lexical tone perception of no...
